President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has pressed for further effort to remove all shanty towns in Egypt.
The problem of slums will be over in two years' time, the president said as he inaugurated the first two phases of the "Asmarat" social housing project in Muqqattam Monday.
Residents of shanty towns should be evacuated and resettled in temporary houses until their areas are upgraded, Sisi said.
Action should be taken not only to remove danger zones, but unplanned areas as well, he stressed.
Sisi said he had lobbied for a 1bn-pound fund during his presidential campaign to be donated by Egyptians with the aim to alleviate the suffering of people.
