UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon yesterday visited the Zaatari Refugee Camp as part of a regional tour for a first-hand look at the plight of Syrian refugees and to draw the world's attention to their humanitarian needs in the host communities.
During the tour of the camp, Mr. Ban emphasised that the UN will continue helping the refugees in Jordan through various international and humanitarian organisations to mitigate their suffering, pointing to the Kingdom's efforts in facing the ramifications of the Syrian crisis.
He said he would urge the global community to mobilize support to enable refugee host countries to carry out the required humanitarian role toward them, adding that the current aid is not enough to meet the needs of the Syrian refugees in Jordan. His message to the refugees about the future was to return to their country through the ceaseless political effort to solve the crisis, calling for the urgent need to expedite reaching an early solution.
President of the World Bank Group, Jim Yong Kim, who accompanied the UN Secretary-General on the tour of Zaatari, praised the outstanding role Jordan had undertaken towards the refugees.
He stressed further socioeconomic aid to Jordan's developmental schemes to improve services to its citizens in light of the Kingdom's internationally-recognized efforts.
