The U.N. Security Council (UNSC) members on Wednesday expressed their support for the Lebanese government and urged the parliament to elect a new president to help ease a political crisis that has fueled mass street protests.
The UNSC members held a meeting on Wednesday and issued a press release in which they asserted they will continue following up the situation in Lebanon in support of its unity and stability, Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told reporters.
A diplomat concerned with Lebanon's file revealed that the UNSC meeting touched on the recent protests witnessed by the country, praising series of talks led by the civil community on the pending political issues, the paper said.
In a related context, a meeting on the Lebanon crisis is expected to take place on the sidelines of the U.N. gathering of world leaders later this month.
