Lawmaker Usama el Abd said on Saturday that he is ready to run for speaker of the parliament.
The ex-president of Al Azhar University, who won the parliament seat on the individual-based list in Damietta, made the remarks following finishing the formalities to receive his membership ID card.
The parliament should prove awareness of the current situations in the country, he said, adding he is the qualified member to lead the lower house in the next stage.
Egypt's parliament — the House of Representatives — will comprise 596 members, 448 elected as independents and 120 from party-based lists. The remaining 28 seats will be filled by presidential appointees.
