Adrian Edward Zielinski of Poland took advantage of problems endured by others Friday to win the men's 85-kilogram Olympic gold medal. Neither Asian champion Sourab Moradi of Iran nor 2008 Olympic silver medalist Andrei Rybakou of Belarus was able to make a legal lift in the snatch portion of the competition. Zielinski lifted 174 kilograms in that phase and then added another 211 kilograms in the clean and jerk. His total was the same as that of Russian Apti Aukhadov, but Zielinski received the gold medal because he weighs slightly less than Aukhadov. Defending Olympic champion Lu Yong of China also was unable to make a lift during the clean and jerk attempts. Kianoush Rostami of Iran won the bronze medal.
