Abdulla Al Hakam yesterday climbed into the top of the table in the Eighth World Military Golf Championship, being held at the Royal Golf Club Course in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
The Bahraini veteran golfer put on a splendid show on the third and penultimate day of this prestigious competition to clinch a deserving lead with a total of 215 gross points.
S Kannler of Germany also made a good leap yesterday, going up one spot to claim second place with 218. American entrant J Massey, who was leading the championship on the second day, slipped to third on countback.
S Mims (219), also of the US, is currently fourth. He is being followed by day 1 leader J Cave of the US (220) in fifth place, sixth K Wesolowski (222) of the US, while T Mahmood of Pakistan (225) is seventh.
Nasser Yaqoub (225), another Bahraini in the fray, slipped on place and is presently eighth, while Canada’s C Lowdon(225) and Bahraini Hamad Al Afnan (225) are in ninth and 10th positions, respectively.
The results changed nothing in the team category as the US continued to lead the standings with 891 points, 18 ahead of runners-up Bahrain.
Germany (912) are still third, and ahead of fourth Pakistan (912), who moved up on place. Canada (917) also made a good leap to claim fifth place, followed by sixth-positioned Spain (937), seventh Thailand (949) and eighth Holland (951), with South African (966) and France (1,009) respectively being ninth and 10th.
In the women’s section, Linda Jeffery extended her leadfrom day 1 withh 224 points. She is being followed byNamakula Flavia of Uganda (227) and American Nicole Johnson (233) who are respectively second and third. K Watts of South Africa (254) is fourth, followed by compatriotH M Vander Berg (262) who climbed into fifth place.
In overall, the US women tops the team standing with 457 points, 54 points ahead of second-placers Uganda and 59 on top of third South Africa. Germany (528) are fourth, followed by fifth Canada (560).
Action continues today (November 19), with the concluding day of the tournament. The first round of play is scheduledto tee off at 7.30am and finishes at 3pm when the prize-distribution ceremony will take place.
The tournament features more than 80 golfers from 16 countries, including Uganda, Thailand, Botswana, Canada, Germany, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Estonia, France, Latvia, Netherlands, Pakistan, Spain and hosts Bahrain.
The Eighth World Military Golf Championship is beingorganised by the Bahrain Defence Force as part of the activities of the International Council for Military Sport (CISM), which organizes this event every year in different nations in the world.
It’s being held under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, who deputised BDF Commander-in-Chief Field Marshal Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa to announce the event open.
