
Curtains came down on the three-day prestigious GCC Second Conference on Sports and Environment held under the Patronage of HE Salah bin Ghanim Nasser Al Ali, the Minister of Youth and Sports with attendance of senior GCC experts on Sports and Environment at Sheraton Hotel, Doha on Thursday. In Thursday’s closing session , a number of decisions and recommendations were taken unanimously to boost the role of the sport in preserving the environment, including approval on GCC research and development system for all GCC sport facilities, a proposal to insert sustainable sport buildings system in the academic curriculums of GCC Faculties of Engineering and the creation of mechanism of cooperation between GCC Ministries of Environment and GCC sport institutions and National Olympic Committees. The participants also recommended a series of measures should be taken to use the social media as a podium that educating people about the relation between the sport and the environment beside establishing a website for GCC Sports and Environment Committee. Among the recommendations, the sport press bodies are committed to allocate space on their pages to shed light on some significant environmental issues as well as the insertion of the environmental issues into school curriculums also recommended. In a post-conference news release, the Qatar Olympic Committee Secretary General, HE Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani lauded the conference’s productive outcomes and the success has been reached during the prestigious GCC event. His Excellency gave thanks to all contributors for their creative ideas presented during the conference’s sessions, he also appreciated the cooperation between the GCC Secretariat-General and GCC Sports and Environment Committee.
