London - Arabstoday

England's James Anderson fears cricket is in danger of losing its soul if officialdom seeks to discourage the kind of on-field aggression for which he was warned by umpire Aleem Dar in the second Test at Trent Bridge. Anderson admits he became frustrated by the West Indies comeback from 136 for six on a Nottingham pitch that became flatter as day one wore on, as a couple of edges flew through the slips and finally by Dar's decision not to give out captain Darren Sammy at a crucial stage. Nothing personal He made his feelings known to Sammy, Marlon Samuels and Dar at the end of what he calls "the most frustrating day I have ever experienced", insisting, however, that there was "nothing personal" in his behaviour towards the West Indies batsmen. But he said: "I fear there is a real danger of the game becoming over-sanitised should it continue to try to discourage people expressing their passion and fight. "Some people just want us to play a nice game of cricket, out in the sun, in the park, but the players in the middle are not like that. "To me, along with all the skill, athleticism and tactical awareness make this the best of all games, there has to be a place in the game for good old fashioned aggression. "I believe that sort of approach is discouraging the aggression that is the very life blood of the game. "There is no point in playing the game if you are not going to throw yourself into it heart and soul. "Surely the crowd want passion and aggression in their cricket? They don't want players to be robots." Anderson has become embroiled in sledging rows before and has admitted that he likes to get into the face of bowlers in some matches. But he appeared to come off second best to Samuels, with the West Indian having the last word before Dar's warning. "Anderson is someone who gets frustrated very easily, so I think he needs to be stronger," said Samuels. Better day The England bowler was not subjected to any further frustration, however, as Andrew Strauss' team finished off the West Indies' first innings before lunch on day two. The tourists reached a total of 370, with Anderson catching Samuels off the bowling of Tim Bresnan, after the batsman had reached 117. Then it was England's turn to make the opposition toil, with skipper Strauss scoring his 21st Test century and Kevin Pietersen getting a half century in a partnership that was unbroken at the close.
