Tyler Skaggs had control issues but notched a win in his major league debut Wednesday for Arizona in its 3-2 win over Miami in Game 1 of a doubleheader. Skaggs (1-0), a 21-year-old, former first-round draft selection of the Los Angeles Angels, overcame five walks and struck out four while limiting the Marlins to two runs on three hits in 6 2/3 innings. The left-hander, who came to Arizona as part of a 2010 trade that sent pitcher Dan Haren to the Angels, went 4-2 with a 2.91 ERA and 45 strikeouts over nine starts for Class AAA Reno this season. David Hernandez tossed a scoreless eighth inning and J.J. Putz collected his 25th save as the D-backs took their first win in Game 3 of a four-game set. Aaron Hill hit a two-run homer and a run-scoring single to supply all three Diamondbacks runs. Miami starter Jacob Turner (0-1) was the loser, yielding three runs on four hits over six full innings. Justin Ruggiano socked a solo homer for Miami.
