Homers by Dustin Ackley, Jesus Montero and Justin Smoak helped create consecutive eight-run innings for Seattle Wednesday in the Mariners 21-8 pasting of Texas. The Mariners scored 27 runs over the final 11 innings of their three-game series with the Rangers. Seattle produced eight runs in the second, with Ackley hitting a three-run blast and Montero delivering a two-run shot. Smoak hit the first of his two homers, a three-run affair, while the Mariners were scoring eight more times in the third. Smoak tacked on another three-run shot during a four-run eighth. Seattle pounded out 21 hits against seven Texas pitchers, 15 of them off starter Derek Holland (4-4) and reliever Yoshinori Tateyama. Blake Beavan (3-4) was the beneficiary of the onslaught, getting the win even though he allowed five runs in six innings. Because he went three innings in relief and finished the game, Hisashi Iwakuma was credited with the first save of his career in his fifth major league appearance. Seattle fell nine runs short of the modern-day (post-1900) major league record for most runs in a game. Texas owns that record, having scored 30 against Baltimore in 2007.
