Seventh seed Eugenie Bouchard advanced into the Australian Open second round Monday with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Anna-Lena Friedsam of Germany.
The 20-year-old Canadian cruised through the first set in 30 minutes but had to grind down her 98th ranked opponent in the second, eventually taking it after 48 minutes.
Bouchard, a semi-finalist at Melbourne Park last year, will play either Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands or Australian wildcard Daria Gavrilova in the second round.
