St. Louis starting pitcher Chris Carpenter, who was 4-0 in the playoffs last season, will open 2012 on the disabled list, the team said Monday. The Cardinals finalized their roster ahead of Wednesday's opening of the season but Carpenter wasn't included. Carpenter, a right-hander, didn't pitch in any spring training games and has what has been described as nerve irritation that had caused weakness in his right shoulder. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list and there is no timetable for his return, the team said. Carpenter was 11-9 with a 3.45 earned run average in the regular season in 2011 and 4-0 with a 3.25 ERA in the playoffs. He picked up wins in both Game 1 and Game 7 of the World Series. In 14 major league seasons -- the last eight with St. Louis -- Carpenter is 144-92 with a 3.76 ERA. A three-time all-star, Carpenter won the National League Cy Young Award after the 2005 season. The Cardinals also said infielder Skip Schumaker, who has an oblique tear, and outfielder Allen Craig, who is recovering from offseason knee surgery, will also start the 2012 season on the disabled list. St. Louis opens the season Wednesday against the Miami Marlins in Florida.
