Australia restricted South Africa to 145 for six after winning the toss in the third and final Twenty20 international at the Sydney Olympic stadium on Sunday.
The Proteas looked set for a big total when Quinton de Kock slammed 48 off 28 balls and fellow opener Reeza Hendricks hit 49 off 48 balls with the score at 117 for three.
But James Faulkner led an Australian fightback, taking three wickets for 28 to put the clamps on the South African scoring and trigger a tumble of wickets.
David Miller remained unbeaten on 34 from 26 balls at the end of the innings.
