World champion Cate Campbell just held off her sister Bronte to win the women's 100-metre freestyle final at the Australian Commonwealth Games trials in Brisbane on Saturday. Campbell (52.68sec) fought off her younger sister (53.02) in a desperate finish to win the Australian title. "Credit where it is due. I thought it was Bronte's night. I came away with the win but she won in all other areas," Cate said. "It was a phenomenal swim. I am over the moon for her." Cate Campbell clocked a time that would have won London Olympic gold two years ago while Bronte would have claimed bronze at both the 2013 world titles and London after eclipsing her personal best by 0.7 of a second. "You don't often get drops (in time) like that ever," Bronte Campbell said. "To see training starting to pay off in a tough race is great." "Tonight I managed to hang on but I am not sure about next time," Cate Campbell said. "This is why we train so well together - she pushed me to my limits. "I am sure it is only a matter of time before she beats me but I will try to prolong that for as long as I can." Meanwhile, Christian Sprenger (26.74) set a new Australian record and personal best time that narrowly missed South African rival Cameron van der Burgh's world mark of 26.67 to win the 50m breaststroke final. Mitch Larkin (1:55.26) set a new Commonwealth record to claim the 200m backstroke gold, shaving one and a half seconds off his personal best to clock the second fastest time of 2014. Jessica Ashwood (8:22.51) won the 800m freestyle, Lorna Tonks (1:07.31) the women's 100m breaststroke, Madeline Groves (2:06.95) the women's 200m butterfly and Christopher Wright (52.16) the men's 100m butterfly.
