Chicago Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood showed up at Wrigley Field Friday hours after his wife posted a Facebook notice that he's retiring as a player. Wood, 34, who has battled shoulder problems through most of his 14 years with the Cubs, apparently planned to pitch one more time before moving to a non-playing position with the team, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. The Cubs played the Chicago White Sox Friday. Wood's wife's Facebook post was simple: "Every story has an end but in life every ending is just a new beginning." Wood, whose earned run average this season has been 8.64, pitched a single inning Tuesday against the St. Louis Cardinals. He allowed a run, a hit and two walks.
