Fletcher was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, a rare inflammatory condition, and thereby forced to take an indefinite break in November, but is already eyeing up a return. The Scotland international is attempting an assortment of different approaches to overcome the problem, all with the hope that it does not affect his career. “I’m OK. I’m taking all my medication and listening to the doctor,” the 28-year-old explained during the United Foundation's ‘Lunch with Legends’ event. "It’s a week-by-week situation so I’ve not got any timescale on recovery, but the target for me is next season now. If I can come back then that would be great for me." "It’s something that will never leave me, but you have to find somehow a way to manage it so that I can still play my football." "I’m trying everything under the sun at the moment, diet, hypnotherapy." Fletcher is not expected to play again this season, although manager Sir Alex Ferguson did include the Scottish midfielder in his Europa League squad in case a comeback before May became a possibility.
