Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng was voted by sports journalists as Germany’s best football player of the year, Germany’s Kicker magazine reported Sunday.
Boateng won 163 votes from sports writers, comfortably ahead of Bayern teammates Thomas Mueller (95) and Robert Lewandowski (90). Fourth in the balloting was Toni Kroos of Real Madrid, with 68 votes.
The 27-year-old Boateng is the first defender to win Germany’s best footballer since Juergen Kohler in 1997.
German football’s best manager was Dirk Schuster for his work at Darmstadt as a newcomer in the Bundesliga last season. Schuster has moved to coach Augsburg.
