Alexander Frei, Switzerland's all-time top goalscorer, is to hang up his boots at the end of the season. The 33-year-old scored 42 goals in 84 appearances for his country between his debut in 2001 and April 2011, when he retired from the international game. As well as FC Basel, Frei has appeared for Thun, Lucerne and Servette Geneva and spent three seasons with Germany's Borussia Dortmund and a stint at French side Rennes. Since returning to his home city of Basel in 2009, Frei has landed three straight Swiss league titles.
