Belgian Eric Gerets has agreed a deal to take over as coach of Qatari champions Lekhwiya in place of Algerian Djamel Belmadi. "Lekhwiya have signed a contract with Gerets as coach," club spokesman Adnane Al-Ali told AFP. "Gerets arrived in Doha on Monday and will take the reins from tomorrow (Tuesday)." Media reports suggested that 58-year-old Gerets had agreed a three-year deal, as the Qatari champions bid to win the AFC Asian Cup next year. Gerets was sacked as Morocco coach last month after a series of poor results. Recruited in 2010 to lead the Atlas Lions to the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™, the former PSV Eindhoven and Marseille boss had been under pressure since the shock 2-0 defeat to Mozambique in a qualifier for the 2013 CAF Africa Cup of Nations.
