Second-half goals from Andre-Pierre Gignac and Rod Fanni helped dominant Marseille defeat Sochaux and make it two wins from two at the start of the new Ligue 1 season. Gignac opened the scoring in the 54th minute and Fanni netted a stoppage-time second as Marseille followed up their 1-0 victory over Reims last time out with another triumph that leaves them level on points with the Ligue 1 pacesetters. Marseille started well and had four decent chances in the opening half-hour with Andre Ayew heading just wide from six yards out early on before Gignac saw his low shot turned behind for a corner by visiting goalkeeper Pierrick Cros. Gignac tested Cros again in the 11th minute with a shot from just inside the area that produced a fingertip save from the visiting custodian, while in the 27th minute Jeremy Morel saw a deflected shot cleared away by Cedric Kante with Cros almost caught out. However, the home side had to wait until the second half to finally make the breakthrough, with Gignac winning an aerial duel with Mathieu Peybernes to power a header beyond Cros and give Marseille a deserved lead. Gignac should really have made it 2-0 six minutes later but was guilty of a glaring miss when he failed to find the target with the goal at his mercy after being found unmarked by a superb ball from Morgan Amlfitano. Despite that miss, Gignac was proving a major attacking threat for Marseille and he was heavily involved in the build-up to another opportunity in the 73rd minute which resulted in Morel firing in a volley that was pushed away by Cros. With Sochaux struggling to create much at the other end, Marseille always looked likely victors but they were unable to finish game off until the 90th minute when Fanni poked home from close range off the underside of the bar to make it 2-0.
