Argentinian side Independiente reached the last 16 of the Copa Sudamericana after eliminating compatriots Boca Juniors on away goals. A 3-3 draw in the first leg proved enough for Independiente to advance under interim coach Enrique Borrelli after the second leg finished goalless. Independiente played with ten men for 44 minutes of the second half after defender Eduardo Tuzzio was sent off following a tough tackle on Lautaro Acosta. They will play Colombia's Envigado or Liverpool of Uruguay, who drew 1-1 in the first leg of their tie, in the last 16. Uruguayan side Nacional took a big step towards the last 16 as they claimed a 1-0 win over Liga de Loja in Ecuador. Sebastian Taborda scored the winner four minutes after coming off the bench in the second half. In Chile, hosts Universidad Catolica saw off Colombia's Tolima 2-0, with Nicolas Trecco opening the scoring in the 35th minute. Catolica goalkeeper Cristopher Toselli saved a penalty from Manuel Maciel in the 63rd minute and Michael Rios doubled the lead three minutes later. In Venezuela, hosts Mineros came back from a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 with Paraguay's Cerro Porteno. Jonathan Fabbro and Julio Dos Santos put Cerro in command, but Cerro 'keeper Diego Barreto was sent off as he fouled Julio Gutierrez in the box in the 62nd minute and Jorge Rojas scored the penalty before Alejandro Guerra equalised.
