World Cup points leader Tina Maze was fastest in the downhill leg of the World Championships super combined Monday, beating Lara Gut's earlier run by the slimmest of margins in Beaver Creek.
Slovenia's Maze clocked one minute, 45.25 seconds, 0.02 seconds clear of 23-year-old Swiss Gut (1:45.27) and 0.26 seconds in front of Austria's Anna Fenninger (1:45.51).
Nicole Hosp, Sochi Olympics silver medallist in the combined, was fourth in 1:46.15 while Norway's Ragnhild Mowinckel rounded out the top five in 1:46.32.
Lindsey Vonn, who last month set a new record for World Cup race wins, finished seventh in 1:46.56.
Mainly a downhill and super-G racer, Vonn will be competing in her first slalom race in over two years.
Austrian technical specialist Kathrin Zettel, who won a bronze in slalom in Sochi, was 11th with a time of 1:47.00 and will get a lower starting position for the afternoon slalom race which takes place later Monday at 2:15 MST (2115 GMT) at the Colorado ski resort.
In the super combined, all skiers take one downhill run. Then the leaders from the downhill go in reverse order in the slalom.
Skiers are then ranked by their combined times from the downhill and slalom.
