Melissa Hoskins of team Greenedge-AIS won the first stage of the Tour of Chongming Island 2012 here on Wednesday. The Australian girl clocked one hour 49 minutes and 36 seconds to finish the 73.4-kilometer stage, beating compatriot Gilmore Rochelle of team Traren Honda to the second place and Australian Monia Baccaille of team Mcipollini Giambenini to third. Local cyclist Huang Li, who already won an Olympic berth for China, had to quit the race after she crashed with just 50 meters to the finish line. She was then taken to a local hospital for treatment. According to the event organizers, Huang's injury was not serious. However, it is unknown whether she could or not continue to compete for next day's race. Meng Lang of China Chongming-Giant team was the top ranked Asian rider, finishing 10th place. Her teammate Liu Xin placed 17th, and another local cyclist Huang Dongyan was 37th. The Tour of Chongming Island 2012, registered continental 2.1-the highest level of its kind in Asia, consists of three stages and will end on May 11.
