Johann Zarco, twelfth on his Moto2 debut in Qatar, set the fastest lap time during a wet opening day to the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez. Moto2 saw the reverse of the MotoGP sessions, with FP1 taking place in fully wet conditions while FP2 was held on a drying track. 2011 125cc title contender Zarco set the fastest time of the day for JiR during the morning session, which the Frenchman finished 0.876sec ahead of Speed Master's Andrea Iannone. Marc VDS rider Mika Kallio - just 17th in the morning - then set the quickest FP2 lap, at the very end of the afternoon session, but the Kalex rider was still a few tenths behind Zarco's morning time. Zarco moved into second place on his final lap of FP2 to complete an impressive opening day, with Spaniard Ricky Cardus hanging on to a surprise third for the Arguiñano Racing Team, running an AJR chassis. Rain master Anthony West was fourth in both sessions for the QMMF Moriwaki team, while Qatar winner and championship leader Marc Marquez rose from 14th in the morning to fifth in the afternoon for Repsol Suter. Iannone, like Zarco, lapped slower in the afternoon but his best FP1 lap was good enough for fifth on combined times, just ahead of Marquez.
