Former World Champion Rey Mysterio has been suspended for 60 days by WWE for a violation of the company’s Wellness Programme. It is the second time the masked superstar has fallen foul of the policy, which forbids wrestlers for taking drugs for recreational use and tests for non-prescribed medication, including anabolic steroids. Mysterio, 37, is currently sidelined with a knee injury, and has not appeared in a wrestling capacity on WWE TV since August last year. However, he recently stated that he hoped to return in May. Due to this suspension, the earliest he could now return is June 25. Mysterio, real name Oscar Gutierrez, was first suspended for a violation in August 2009. He received a 30-day ban as it was his first transgression. On that occasion he told The Record in Mexico that he tested positive for a painkiller he was taking for arm and knee problems. He argued that he was not given enough time to produce the prescription he had for the painkillers due to being on a promotion tour. In 2007 Gutierrez was named, along with numerous other WWE stars, in a Sports Illustrated report which alleged numerous wrestlers had obtained subscriptions for steroids. The allegations pre-dated the introduction of the Wellness Policy. Mysterio is a two-time World Champion, has held the WWE title once and has been Intercontinental champion twice. He held Tag team and cruiserweight gold in both WWE and WCW.
