NHL Blackhawks ink coach Quenneville to three-year extension

Chicago Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville signed a three-year contract extension with the National Hockey League club on Tuesday, keeping him with the team through the 2019-20 campaign.

Quenneville is one victory shy of tying four-time Stanley Cup winner Al Arbour's NHL record of 782 victories.

Quenneville is 781-451 with 187 overtime losses over parts of 19 seasons as an NHL coach, eight with St. Louis and three with Colorado as well as his current tenure with Chicago.

The Canadian-born 57-year-old, who became a dual US citizen in 2011, is in his eighth season guiding the Blackhawks and is the only active coach to have led a team to three Stanley Cup championships, directing Chicago to the trophy in 2010, 2013 and 2015.

Quenneville's Blackhawks rank second in the NHL Western Conference and third overall in the NHL with 58 points off 27 wins through 44 games.

They have won seven games in a row entering a Tuesday game with Nashville and Quenneville could pass Arbour as early as Thursday at Montreal with their next game after that on Friday at Toronto.
