Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) is hoping to make national squash queen Datuk Nicol Ann David as its squash icon. UMT vice-chancellor Datuk Aziz Deraman said Nicol was chosen as the university's icon to attract more students and local residents to pick up the sport. He said it was also an initiative of the university to develop the squash sport among students to attain international standard. "UMT has been given the responsibility to lead squash among all institutes of higher learning in the country and therefore we took the opportunity to invite the world's number one player to boost the interests of students. "We are working on attracting more students, staff and members of the public to be pick up the sport as squash is still not popular in Terengganu," he told reporters at a UMT Sports Award Ceremony here.
