Peyton Manning surpassed Brett Favre as the NFL's all-time passing yards leader but any celebration was shortlived as the Broncos quarterback was yanked from the game against Kansas City after throwing four interceptions.
Manning connected with Ronnie Hillman in the first quarter to boost his career yardage total to 71,840 -- surpassing former Green Bay great Favre's record of 71,838.
The contest was stopped momentarily to acknowledge Manning's feat -- but things went downhill quickly from there for the five-time NFL Most Valuable Player.
He completed just five of 20 passing attempts for 35 yards and was picked off four times before he was benched in favor of backup Brock Osweiler with 6:34 to play in the third quarter.
Manning, in his 18th season, had missed practice during the week with a foot injury and was also listed as battling sore ribs.
He was ineffective as he struggled to avoid pressure in the pocket and the Chiefs defense took full advantage on the way to a 29-13 victory.
Charcandrick West ran for a touchdown and caught an 80-yard scoring pass from Alex Smith to help Kansas City snap a seven-game losing streak against Denver.
Including an interception by Osweiler the Broncos had five turnovers leading to 20 Kansas City points.
The defeat meant Manning failed to snap a tie with Favre for most career regular-season wins, with both on 186.
He spent his first 14 years in the league with Indianapolis, where he won a Super Bowl as a member of the Colts.
The passing yardage mark was not the only record within Manning's reach on Sunday.
Apart from Favre and Manning -- who played his first 14 seasons in Indianapolis and led the Colts to a Super Bowl title -- Dan Marino is the only other quarterback in NFL history to have topped 60,000 career passing yards.
