Angelique Kerber began Tuesday her life as tennis number 1 by beating Kristina Mladenovic 6-7 (7-4), 6-1, 6-4 in the Wuhan Open.
Kerber had to come back from one set down to win the game. The 28-year-old German finished off France's Mladenovic with a forehand winner to set up a match against follow double grand slam champion Petra Kvitova.
The Czech 14th seed, champion in China two years ago, booked her spot in the third round with a defeat of Elina Svitolina 6-3, 6-1.
