Top-seeded Marion Bartoli survived a difficult test Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals of the Mercury Insurance Open. Bartoli defeated Vania King 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 and will next meet the winner of Thursday's match between Misaki Doi and Christina McHale. Bartoli has reached a career-best No. 7 spot in the world rankings. In other second-round matches Thursday, Yung-Jan Chan eliminated Heather Watson 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), Varvara Lepchenko defeated Chanelle Scheepers 6-4, 6-2 and fourth-seeded Nadia Petrova was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Alexa Glatch. No. 2 seed Dominika Cibulkova will be in action Thursday when she meets Marina Erakovic in the second round.
