6.5-magnitude quake strikes off India's Nicobar islands

An earthquake of 6.5 magnitude jolted Friday evening 70 km east off Indira Point in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India, news channel NDTV reported. The quake was at a depth of 9.92 km about 108.8 km southeast of Misha, Nicobar Islands, in the Indian Ocean, according to information released by the U.S. Geological Survey website. There were no immediate reports of serious damage, and no tsunami warning was issued. Andaman and Nicobar is made up of more than 500 mostly uninhabited islands. The area has frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity, and is part of the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.
