6.9-magnitude quake strike off New Zealand's Raoul Island

A strong quake occurred near one of New Zealand's remote islands, the U.S. Geological Survey ( USGS) said on its website Tuesday.
The tremor, measured 6.9 on the Richer Scale, was recorded at 7: 19 a.m. local time Tuesday, 96 km southeast of Raoul Island, a northernmost outpost without settlers some 800 km northeast of New Zealand's North Island.
The epicenter was at a depth of 20 km.
The USGS previously reported the magnitude of the quake was 7.2.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center ruled out destructive and widespread tsunami, though cautioned local tsunami along coastal areas could occur.
Conservation officials and volunteers stationed on the island told Radio New Zealand that they felt the tremor which caused no damage.
