A winter storm that crippled the South with snow and ice marched north to Washington, New York and Boston Thursday, packing a foot or more of snow in places, UPI reported. "The most persistent band of heavy snow will largely overspread the megalopolis through daybreak," the National Weather Service said, referring to the chain of Northeastern seaboard metropolitan areas from Washington and northern Virginia through Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston. The same storm blamed for at least 11 deaths across the South and the cancellation of more than 3,700 airline flights Wednesday was forecast to hammer Washington and Baltimore with 5 to 10 inches, then move inland leaving Philadelphia with 1 to 3 inches and New York and Boston with 3 to 6 inches, AccuWeather said.
