Heavy rain caused flash flooding in many parts of Athens Friday, sweeping cars through streets and leaving shops and homes knee-deep in muddy water, dpa reported.
Motorists could be seen stranded along major streets in the western part of the city near the suburbs of Pireaus, Keratsini and Drapetsona as mudslides swept through the area, picking up cars and depositing them in ditches.
The fire brigade said crews were working to pump water, which in many areas reached nearly a metre high, out of more than 200 flooded homes and businesses.
Rainstorms and low temperatures are expected to hit much of the country over the weekend, with snow expected for many parts of northern Greece.
