Heavy rain causes walls to collapse in Jerah, Amman

A wall collapsed at Al Mastabah Secondary School for Girls in Jerash on Saturday night. No casualties were reported. Fayez Jowayed, head of the Jerash Education Directorate, said the 50-year-old wall in the school administration building collapsed after it could not support soil saturated with rainwater. Earlier, the directorate had asked the education ministry to tear down the structure, which consists of four old rooms, and replace it with a new building, but the government buildings department did not take these claims into account. Instead, it floated a tender to repair cracks and to carry out painting and paving work at a cost of around JD15,000. Also Sunday, a supporting wall collapsed in a building located in the Marj Al Hamam neighbourhood in Amman. The Greater Amman Municipality evacuated the residents to other buildings, while its engineering staff carried out the required maintenance.
