Hurricane Michael weakened Monday as it moved in the Atlantic Ocean about 1,000 miles west of the Azores Islands, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said. Michael, with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph, was about 1,065 miles west of the Azores moving west at 7 mph, the center said in its 5 a.m. EDT forecast. No watches or warnings were posted. Michael was expected to turn northwestward by Monday night, and then shift northward or northeastward and gather some speed on Tuesday, the center said. Forecasters said Michael could weaken from a Category 1 hurricane by Monday night. Hurricane force winds extend from Michael's center outward to about 15 miles, the NHC said. Tropical storm winds extend outward from center about 70 miles.
