Magnitud 5.4 quake hits Alaska islands

A magnitude-5.4 earthquake jolted Andreanof Islands, in northwestern Alaska, at 0335 GMT Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said. The epicenter, located at a depth of 10.3 km, was 35 km northeast of Amatignak Island, according to the agency, which earlier put the magnitude at 5.7 and the depth at 2 km. The earth's most active seismic feature, the circum-Pacific seismic belt, brushes the U.S. state of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands, where more earthquakes occur than in the other 49 U.S. states combined.
