
A magnitude-5.9 earthquake centered in eastern Taiwan rattled the entire island Wednesday, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, the Taipei-based Central News Agency said. The quake occurred at 8:21 a.m. (0021 GMT) in Hualien County at a depth of 18 kilometers, according to the Central Weather Bureau. The tremor was also felt in the capital Taipei, some 170 kilometers north of Hualien. The quake was Taiwan's 11th of magnitude 5 or above since January, according to the report. Earthquakes are frequent in Taiwan and the most destructive was a 7.6-magnitude quake in 1999, killing more than 2,400 people
