Russia’s Arctic military garrison Polar Star on the Wrangel Island has gone operational, spokesman for the Eastern Military District Colonel Alexander Gordeyev said Tuesday.
The contractor company Spetsstroi’s officials presented the symbolic key to the garrison to the military district’s commander Sergey Alyokminsky at an inauguration ceremony.
The compound consist of the residential, logistics and administrative units. There is a sauna, laundry and gym and access to the world web.
“The compound’s design allows the personnel to move from unit to unit without venturing into the Arctic chill,” Gordeyev said.
The Russian military plans to have six garrisons of the Polar Star type in the Arctic. The model owes the name to its layout resembling a star.
