A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck off Fiji on Sunday shortly after another hit off Tonga but there was no threat of a tsunami
Wellington - Arab Today
A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck off Fiji on Sunday shortly after another hit off Tonga but there was no threat of a tsunami, US seismologists said.
The offshore quake occurred at 9:28 am (2128 GMT Saturday), centered around 100 kilometers (62 miles) northeast of the Fijian island of Ndoi at a depth of 594 km, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said on its website.
It came 20 minutes after a 6.3-magnitude quake hit 124 kilometers northwest of Tonga.
The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said neither quake posed a tsunami threat.
In its preliminary impact assessment, the USGS said there was a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

To 'eternal style' of late Alaia
Paris - Al Maghrib Today
Two months after legendary designer Azzedine Alaia's sudden death plunged the fashion world into mourning, an exhibition in homage to the "King of Cling" opened Monday in his studios in Paris. The Tunisian-born designer, renowned for the way his clothes hugged the body, died suddenly in November aged 82, reportedly of heart failure after falling down the stairs at his home. The diminutive maverick, who ignored fashion week convention by showing when and where he wanted, in July produced his first couture collection in six years to rapturous reviews. Now some of his most iconic dresses are going on display in the glass-roofed gallery next to his studio and home in the Marais district where he used to show his creations.
