EU: East Ukraine vote would only further worsen situation

The European Union on Thursday said a decision to go ahead with an independence vote in east Ukraine that has "no legitimacy" can "only further worsen" the situation. Commenting on a rebel decision to hold the vote despite President Vladimir Putin's call for a postponement, a spokeswoman for EU foreign policy Catherine Ashton said: "Such a vote could have no democratic legitimacy and would only further worsen the situation."
