Tropical storm Polo surged to hurricane strength late Wednesday off Mexico's Pacific coast, authorities said.
"Polo is now a Category One storm 290 kilometers (180 miles) south of Manzanillo," a port city on Mexico's west coast, the Conagua national water agency announced on Twitter.
