The Delegation of the European Union in Riyadh has announced the winners of the Chaillot Prize for the Promotion of Human Rights in the GCC region in 2014.
They are Bahrain's National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) and the Ombudsman at the Ministry of Interior.
The Chaillot Prize was awarded to the NIHR and the Ombudsman in order to acknowledge and further encourage their remarkable efforts and work for the promotion and protection of human rights in the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Delegation of the European Union in Riyadh said in a statement.
The two laureates' first annual reports have been particularly noticed and appreciated for their comprehensive and sincere account of the country's human rights situation, as well as for their powerful and constructive recommendations on how to overcome proven deficiencies and shortcomings in important areas related to human rights, the statement added.
The awarding ceremony will take place in Manama, on 9 December 2014, in order to mark the Human Rights Day observed by the international community every year on 10 December, the European delegation said.
The Chaillot Prize is presented annually by the Delegation of the European Union in Riyadh (responsible for relations with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kingdom of Bahrain, State of Kuwait, Sultanate of Oman and State of Qatar), in co-operation with the Delegation of the European Union to the United Arab Emirates and the Embassies of the European Union Member States to GCC countries, to civil society organisations and public or private institutions for actions, campaigns and projects which support human rights awareness, promotion and protection in the GCC region.
The Prize is named after the Palais de Chaillot in Paris where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted on 10 December 1948 by the United Nations General Assembly.
