Minister of Communication Hamid Grine installed Sunday in Algiers Miloud Chorfi as president of the regulatory authority for the broadcasting industry.
The installation ceremony took place in the presence of Communication Ministry executives and media managers.
Grine said it is a red letter day as it is the first time since independence that such a body is created in Algeria for governing and regulating the broadcasting industry.
The minister welcomed the appointment of Chorfi as head of the body, paying tribute to his experience in the field.
"Chorfi is a former journalist at the National Radio and Television and had chaired the National Council of Broadcasting and the Committee on Information at the People's National Assembly (Lower House of Parliament)."
The creation of the regulatory authority means that Algeria has entered a new era in the media industry, and there will be new bases for broadcasting.
