Kuwait on Wednesday hailed the significant role played by the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in helping displaced people worldwide, reiterating commitment to generously support the international organization's humanitarian activities.
"The UNHCR plays a major role in caring for refugees and internally displaced people and it systematically tackles humanitarian crises in an effective way," Kuwait's Delegate to the United Nations Office and International Organizations in Geneva Jamal Al-Ghuneim said Wednesday at the 65th session of the Executive Committee (ExCom) of the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).
He described the UNHCR as the main supporter for the protection of refugees all over the world.
Meanwhile, Al-Ghuneim reiterated Kuwait's commitment to support the humanitarian activities of the UNHCR and other international organizations to help alleviate the suffering of people in distress across the globe.
He noted that Kuwait has contributed USD 210 million in the past two years to the UNHCR operations to provide relief and humanitarian aid to Syrian internally and externally displaced people.
Kuwait also contributed USD 3 million to the UNHCR operations in Iraq refugees, he said.
The UNHCR's governing ExCom holds its 65th annual meeting in Geneva during the period September 30 to October 2 to review and approve the agency's programmes and budget, advises on international protection and discuss a wide range of other issues with UNHCR and its intergovernmental and non-governmental partners.
