A Bahraini delegation led by Supreme Council for the Environment Chief Executive Officer Dr. Adel Khalifa Al-Zayani has today attended the opening session of the 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES/UNEP) in Bangkok. Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra declared the global conference open, in the presence of 187 countries, signatories in the (CITES/UNEP. The global event which runs until March 14 reviews progress in the conservation of the 35,000+ species included in the Convention's Appendices; considers proposals to amend the lists of species in the Appendices; recommends measures to improve the effectiveness of the Convention; and makes provisions (including the adoption of a budget) necessary to allow the Secretariat to function effectively. The Kingdom of Bahrain joined CITES/UNEP Convention by virtue of the law 27 for 2012. It is taking part in the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES/UNEP) for the first time.
