Increased spending on food drove French household consumption up by 0.1 percent in April compared to the 0.7 percent decrease a month earlier, official data showed on Friday.
April's increase was mainly due to a 0.4 percent rise in food products consumption, which offset a 0.4 percent decline in durable goods purchases and a 0.3 percent fall in energy consumption, the French national statistics bureau Insee said in its monthly economic report.
French households bought 1.3 percent more textile and leather goods compared to the 5.1 percent drop reported in March.
Expenditure in goods represents half of the domestic total consumption in France.
