US 2016 Auto Sales Set Record for Seventh Straight Year
Auto Sales Set Record for Seventh Straight Year
Washington - QNA
The US auto market got a boost from brisk sales in December, helping the industry set another annual record for the most new cars sold in a year, the automakers said Wednesday.
High demand for sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and pickup trucks drove up total sales for the year to 17.54 million vehicles, according to statistics compiled by the trade magazine Automotive News. It was the seventh year in a row that US car sales set a record for the number of units sold, the magazine said.
The number is an increase of 0.3 % over 2015, which set the previous record. The number of cars sold in December was up 3 % to 1.69 million. The results, driven by low petrol prices across the country and low interest rates, were better than analysts' expectations.
General Motors, the largest US carmaker, saw its sales in December rise 10 % over the same month last year. Ford, the second-largest US carmaker, saw its sales increase 0.1 %. Nissan and Honda set new US sales records for December last month.

To 'eternal style' of late Alaia
Paris - Al Maghrib Today
Two months after legendary designer Azzedine Alaia's sudden death plunged the fashion world into mourning, an exhibition in homage to the "King of Cling" opened Monday in his studios in Paris. The Tunisian-born designer, renowned for the way his clothes hugged the body, died suddenly in November aged 82, reportedly of heart failure after falling down the stairs at his home. The diminutive maverick, who ignored fashion week convention by showing when and where he wanted, in July produced his first couture collection in six years to rapturous reviews. Now some of his most iconic dresses are going on display in the glass-roofed gallery next to his studio and home in the Marais district where he used to show his creations. It includes the dress worn by supermodel Naomi Campbell, his longtime friend and muse, when she led hisGMT 09:22 2018 Monday ,22 January
