General Motors has asked its Cadillac dealers to stop the sale of certain models as it doesn't have a fix for the ignition switch problem.
Dealers have been asked to halt the sale of 2003 to 2013 models of the CTS and 2004 to 2006 SRX models as used cars, in a July 2 order that was updated on July 8. The car maker said it does not have a solution for an issue with the ignition switch, which causes the engine to shut off if the driver's knee hits the key.
The problem can lead to the disengaging of the car's air bags and power steering and brakes, leading to possible crashes, or injuries in the event of a crash. Issues with Cadillacs are not similar to those plaguing Chevrolet Cobalts and Saturn Ions that were recalled earlier this year and have led to congressional and federal investigations. The ignition switches in Cadillacs didn't switch off as easily as they did in other cars.
GM had issued a recall on June 30 for 554,000 Cadillacs and said the order "is still in effect for the foreseeable future," according to GM spokesman Alan Adler.
