Peg Perego USA Inc. is recalling 223,000 strollers after a child died while trapped between the seat and the tray, U.S. regulators said. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said a six-month-old boy from Tarzana, Calif., died of strangulation in 2004 and a seven-month-old girl nearly died in 2006 in New York City. The entrapment and strangulation can occur when a child younger than one year old is not harnessed in the seat, regulators said. The recall involves two models of Peg Perego strollers, the Venezia and Pliko-P3. They were manufactured between January 2004 and September 2007, in a variety of colors. The strollers were also made prior to the establishment of new voluntary industry standards created in January 2008 to address this very problem, the commission said. Only strollers that have a child tray with one cup holder are part of this recall. Strollers with a bumper bar in front of the child or a tray with two cup holders are not included in this recall, the commission said. The strollers in the recall were sold from January 2004 through September 2010 for between $270 and $450. Consumers were advised to stop using the strollers and contact the company for a free repair kit. Retailers, the commission said, will not have repair kits for customers, who should contact Peg Perego USA Inc., instead. Consumers can call 888-734-6020 for information.re
